From 6 April 2007, all tenancy deposits for Assured Shorthold
Tenancies to a private landlord or letting agent must be protected by
a Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme (TDPS).
The new legislation, introduced by the Housing Act 2004, only applies
to assured shorthold tenants who either take up a new tenancy from 6
April 2007, or whose current landlord asks them to sign a new tenancy
agreement on or after that date.
The scheme has been introduced to protect deposits and provide a
fairer system for settling disputes about the return of a deposit at
the end of a tenancy.
Going forward, an independent service will help to resolve any deposit disputes. This service will be free for tenants although certain charges apply to landlords dependent on which scheme they use. Please contact us on 020 7221 9479 for further details.
